Women in the Sciences and Engineering Institute bestow recognition awards

University Park, PA -- The Women in the Sciences and Engineering Institute (WISE) presented its first WISE Recognition Awards to the following individuals at a recent reception: Helen Smiciklas Wright, faculty category; Catherine Lyon Rung, staff category; Melanie Fox, graduate student category; and Stephanie Cubellis, undergraduate student category. These awards are given in recognition to individuals who have excelled in helping women and girls recognize and achieve their potential in the sciences and engineering. Honorable mentions were given to the following individuals: Jean Brenchley, faculty; Cheryl Knobloch, staff; Sharmishtha Dattagupta, graduate student; and Julie Bigelow, undergraduate student.

In addition, Outstanding Service Awards were presented to the following individuals: Shelly Aina, manager, Information Technology, Educational Equity; Julie Bigelow, undergraduate, chemical engineering; Kate Butler, senior lecturer, crop and soil sciences; Jane Childs, corporate and foundation analyst; Catherine Damante, undergraduate, Information Sciences and Technology; Candace Davison, research and education specialist, nuclear engineering; Ali Demirci, associate professor, agricultural and biological engineering; Renee Diehl, professor of physics; Jenni Evans, professor of meteorology; Marianne Fivek, coordinator, Undergraduate Student Recruitment, College of Agricultural Sciences, and affiliate assistant professor, Agricultural and Extension Education; Suzanne Gladfelter, senior instructor, Information Sciences and Technology, Penn State York; Diane Henderson, professor of mathematics; Cheryl Knobloch, program development specialist, Women in Engineering Program; Minoo Kosarian, graduate student, geosciences; Amy Leddy, advising program coordinator, Eberly College of Science; Janice Margle, associate professor, engineering, Penn State Abington; Laurel Martin, former graduate student, animal sciences; Virginia McKay, former chair of the WISE External Stakeholders Committee; Frank McNulty, vice president, Pullman Industries; David Meredith, associate professor, engineering, Penn State Fayette; Wendy Owen, vice president of communication, Lockheed Martin; Steve Piazza, associate professor, kinesiology; Martin Pietrucha, professor, civil engineering, and director, Science, Technology and Society Program; and Janet Winter, senior lecturer, mathematics, Penn State Berks.
