The (a) pole position for December 1999 and (b) the pole position for the
same month as determined by integrating the equatorial bulge torque forward
in time. The degree of similarity between (a) and (b) is a measure of
the extent to which polar motion is driven by the
weather. The colors
red, green, and blue indicate the first, middle, and last 10 ten days of
the month, respectively. The units on the axes are mas (milliarcseconds),
where 1.0 mas ~ 3.0 cm.
