The Environmental Chemistry Student Symposium (ECSS) is a student organized and
run symposium
designed to foster interactions between undergraduate
and graduate scientists and engineers engaged in environmental research. Students
from multiple disciplines will present their research to the environmental community of Penn State
and regional educational institutions. The symposium is sponsored by the Center
for Environmental Chemistry and Geochemistry.
Thank you for participating in this year's ECSS.
Although this symposium was organized by graduate students, it would not have been possible without the strong support of various individuals and organizations here at Penn State. We would like to take this time to acknowledge them for their effort, guidance, and support.
We would like to thank Dr. Karl Mueller and the Center for Environmental Chemistry and Geochemistry (CECG) executive committee for the support and advice offered to the organizing committee.
The symposium was funded in part by the Eberly College of Science and the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences through their contributions to the CECG, but it would not be possible without the additional and generous support from the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment, the College of Agricultural Sciences, and the College of Engineering.
The chairs and the student organizing committee wish to thank Debra Lambert and Denise Kowalski for administrative assistance.
We are grateful to the many individuals that participated in the symposium as judges. Their service added professionalism to our efforts to provide a competitive forum to encourage excellence in environmental scientific research. This year, the judging process was improved due to high response of professors and post-comps graduate students from the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. It allowed for the assignation of an even number of three judges per poster. We are especially grateful to these people.
We would like to acknowledge our keynote speaker, Dr. David Dzombak, for sharing his professional experiences with students at this interdisciplinary symposium and for encouraging us to be involved in public dialog of environmental issues.
We want to thank all those who presented work at this symposium for their effort. The great diversity of research presented at the ECSS is its greatest strength, and the symposium would have not been a success without the outstanding contributions of the student participants from Penn State, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Juniata College, and Bucknell University. This year we got a record number of 68 submissions which account for a 12% more of participation than the two previous years.
Finally, the symposium co-chairs wish to thank all the volunteers that served on the subcommittees listed below. Their dedication to this meeting allowed for the continuation of a great tradition.
