  Photo Contest

The photo submission deadline is past, and both preliminary and final judging are now complete.  We are proud to announce that the winners of the photo contest are:

First Place: Aaron Diefendorf

Second Place: Heather Buss

Third Place: Rick Zhuang

Winning photographs will be on display at the 9th Annual ECSS, March 17-18, 2006.  The judging criteria used for this photo contest can be found below.

Photo contest Judging:

Photos will be displayed on this website as well on a poster at the symposium.

Judging will be based on artistic quality of the photograph and the caption, and the criteria below.

I. Supporting text and environmental relevance

Does the caption adequately introduce the picture? How well does the photographer relate the relevancy of their photo to the environment?

II. Composition and complexity

Are photographic elements of interest emphasized or accentuated by the composition? Does the photo convey a scene's complexity or distill a complex scene into its base fundamentals?

III. Creativity

Was the subject matter selected pictured in a unique way or was something common shown from a nontraditional point-of-view? Does the photo demonstrate originality?

IV. Technical quality

Is the photo in focus? Is the lighting acceptable?

V. General aesthetic quality

Is the subject material or the landscape pictured especially breathtaking? Any other general comments or concerns not addressed above?

VI. Does this photo fulfill the requirements for an honorable mention?
