9th Annual Environmental Chemistry Student Symposium
March 17-18, 2006

The Environmental Chemistry Student Symposium (ECSS) is a student organized and run symposium designed to foster interactions between undergraduate and graduate scientists and engineers engaged in environmental research. Students from multiple disciplines will present their research to the environmental community of Penn State and regional educational institutions. The symposium is sponsored by the Center for Environmental Chemistry and Geochemistry.

The symposium will be open to the public. The 2006 ECSS will be held in the Agricultural Sciences and Industries Building on the University Park campus of Penn State.

      Award Winners (Posters and Talks)

Although this symposium was organized by graduate students, it would not have been possible without the strong support of various individuals and organizations here at Penn State. We would like to take this time to acknowledge them for their effort, guidance, and support.

We would like to thank Karl Mueller and the Center for Environmental Chemistry and Geochemistry executive committee for their generous support of the symposium, the advice they offered the organizing committee, and their timely solicitation of abstracts.

The symposium is funded in part by the Eberly College of Science and the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences through their contributions to the CECG, but would not be possible without the additional and generous support form the Penn State Institutes of the Environment, The College of Agricultural Sciences and the College of Engineering.

The chairs and the student organizing committee wish to thank Debra Lambert and Denise Kowalski for administrative assistance - they solved many problems before they became crises and made the organization of this symposium immeasurably easier.

We are grateful to the many individuals that are participating in the symposium as judges. Their service adds professionalism to our efforts to provide a competitive forum to encourage excellence in environmental scientific research.

We would like to acknowledge our keynote speaker, Dr. Gene Likens, for his exemplary research, for his ability to communicate his work with an interdisciplinary audience, and for his interest in sharing his professional experiences with students. Furthermore, we owe a great deal of thanks to Dr. Likens and his wife for traveling through rough weather to attend this meeting.

We want to thank all those who have presented work at this symposium for their effort – the great diversity of research presented at the ECSS is its greatest strength, and the symposium would not be a success without the outstanding contributions of the student participants.

Finally the symposium co-chairs wish to thank all the volunteers that served on the Steering Committee. The people listed below did the vast majority of the work required to run the symposium. Their dedication to this meeting has allowed for the continuation of a great tradition, and their desire to innovate has fostered its growth.
