The contest is open to all students. Professors and post-docs may enter, but are not eligible for cash prizes. Photographs will be displayed at
the
8TH ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY SYMPOSIUM, April 1-2, 2005.
Submissions should be sent to: Alexis Navarre, 315 Hosler, Dept. of
Geosciences, Penn State University, University Park, PA 16802. Email submissions are preferred. Emails should contain a photo file of proper
quality for printing and information from #2 and 3 below. Send submissions to anavarre@geosc.psu.edu.
Almost any format entry will be accepted (slides, photos, digital images, etc...), but please have slides converted to at least a 4x6 matte print
before submitting for ease of viewing and judging.
Please include:
1. The original photograph or slide.
2. A short (up to one page) description, including the region, environment, and location of the photo.
3. A cover page listing your name, department, major, local phone number, and e-mail address.
4. A self-addressed stamped envelope for returning the photo at the conclusion of the contest (optional).
Contest Submission Deadline is March 14th.
Photo contest Judging:
Photos will be printed at 4x6 inch size on glossy paper with their figure captions next to them.
Any hard copy entries will be scanned in at 200 dpi resolution and printed with the digital submissions for
judging.
Judging will be based on artistic quality of the photograph and the caption, and the criteria below.
I. Supporting text and environmental relevance
Does the caption adequately introduce the picture?
How well does the photographer relate the relevancy of their photo to the environment?
II. Composition and complexity
Are photographic elements of interest emphasized or accentuated by the composition?
Does the photo convey a scene's complexity or distill a complex scene into its base fundamentals?
III. Creativity
Was the subject matter selected pictured in a unique way or was something common shown from a nontraditional point-of-view?
Does the photo demonstrate originality?
IV. Technical quality
Is the photo in focus?
Is the lighting acceptable?
V. General aesthetic quality
Is the subject material or the landscape pictured especially breathtaking?
Any other general comments or concerns not addressed above?
VI. Does this photo fulfill the requirements for an honorable mention?
