ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST:  Monetary Prizes For The Best Environmental Photos

The contest is open to all students.(Professors and post-docs may enter, but are not eligible for cash prizes) Photographs will be displayed at the FIFTH ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY SYMPOSIUM, March 22-23, 2002 .Submissions should be sent to: Aubrey Zerkle, 310 Deike Building, University Park, PA 16802

Please include:

1. The original photograph or slide.

2. A short (up to one page) description, including the region, environment, and location of the photo.

3. A cover page listing your name, department, major, local phone number, and e-mail address.

4. A self-addressed stamped envelope for returning the photo at the conclusion of the contest (optional).

Contest Submission Deadline is February 1, 2002

The winner will be announced in March via e-mail to all participants.

Photo contest Judging:

The following topics will be judged for the photo contest:

I. Supporting text and environmental relevance

• Does the caption adequately introduce the picture?
• How well does the photographer relate the relevancy of their photo to the environment?

II.Composition and complexity

• Are photographic elements of interest emphasized or accentuated by the composition?
  • Does the photo convey a scene's complexity or distill a complex scene into its base fundamentals?

III.Creativity

• Was the subject matter selected pictured in a unique way or was something common shown from a nontraditional point-of-view?
• Does the photo demonstrate originality?

IV. Technical quality

• Is the photo in focus?
• Is the lighting acceptable?

V. General aesthetic quality

• Is the subject material or the landscape pictured especially breathtaking?
• Any other general comments or concerns not addressed above?

VI. Does this photo fulfill the requirements for an honorable mention?
